The Foundation of Prayer
When the disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray," He gave them this. Every line maps to an element of prayer. This is the blueprint.
Matthew 6:9-13
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.
Jesus packed an entire prayer life into a few sentences. Here's how each line maps to an element of prayer.
Getting Into God's Presence
"Our Father in heaven..."
Recognizing who you're talking to. Coming before the Creator of the universe — not as a stranger, but as His child. He's not distant. He's your Father.
Honoring Who He Is
"Hallowed be Your name..."
His name is holy — set apart, above everything. Before we ask for anything, we worship. We tell Him who He is: faithful, mighty, good, sovereign, beautiful.
Gratitude for What He's Done
"Our Father..."
That we can call the God of the universe 'Father' — that's grace. Thank Him for salvation, for breath, for every good thing you didn't earn and don't deserve.
Coming Clean Before Him
"And forgive us our debts..."
We bring our sin into the light — not to be condemned, but to be cleansed. God already knows. Confession isn't informing Him; it's agreeing with Him.
Releasing What's Been Done to You
"As we forgive our debtors..."
The hardest line in the prayer. We forgive not because they deserve it, but because we've been forgiven. Unforgiveness is a prison — and you hold the key.
Bringing Your Needs to Him
"Give us this day our daily bread..."
Not next year's bread. Today's. God wants us to come to Him daily, trusting Him one day at a time. He's not bothered by your needs — He invites them.
Praying for Others
"Our... us... we..."
Notice — the entire prayer is plural. It's never just 'my' bread or 'my' forgiveness. We carry each other before the throne. Your prayer for someone else may be the lifeline they need today.
Standing Against the Enemy
"And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one..."
We have a real enemy. This isn't paranoia — it's awareness. We ask God to guard our steps, protect our minds, and fight the battles we can't see.
Yielding to God's Will
"Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven..."
The prayer of ultimate trust. Not my plans, my timeline, my way — but Yours. In heaven, God's will is done perfectly. We're asking for that reality to break into our lives right now.
Closing with Confidence
"For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."
We end where we began — it's all about Him. The kingdom is His. The power is His. The glory is His. Not sometimes. Forever. And we say Amen — 'So be it. I believe it. It is settled.'
Jesus didn't give us this prayer to recite mindlessly. He gave it as a map — a path into the very presence of God.
